The name of this shell comes from the Greek spondylos “vertebra,” in reference to its hinge, so well articulated that it is compared to a vertebra. But the most impressive feature of this beautiful shell is its spines, which serve both as protection and as anchors on the rocks where it settles. Its earliest uses date back to the Neolithic period.
