This piece is made of a fragment of mother-of-pearl. The iridescent appearance of mother-of-pearl is due to successive thin layers of calcium carbonate, in the form of aragonite, bound together by conchiolin. Mother-of-pearl is perceived as a lunar material, connected to cycles and protection. Its progressive formation, layer by layer, evokes deep time, healing, and resilience. Nothing is brutal. Everything is patient accumulation, silent repair, constant adaptation. This is no doubt why it has been used as a talisman, amulet, or sacred material in many civilizations.
On this piece, friction from the sand, currents, and shore gradually sculpted its shape, revealing a raw, nacreous, irregular surface.
